The clickable scopes with precision with the ¼ MOA or 0.1Mil adjustment per click need to be calibrated. Such scopes are most helpful when you are targeting from more than 250 yards distance.
On the contrary, if you are using the scopes with friction adjustable turrets, you do not need to learn how to calibrate a scope. Since they are not very specific devices and can work if you are going out hunting, they work well when the distance between you and the target is less than 250 yards.
Install the Base Mount
The prior step to the actual calibration of the scope is the installation of scope, and you need to be mindful of the following:
- Keep your concentration throughout the process.
- A good quality mount is comparatively expensive, but it is worth it because it will undoubtedly stay with you for long.
Now comes the actual mounting of the base, which you can do as under:
- Always tighten the screws according to the manual of instructions you have gotten with the mount.
- Follow the X-pattern ahead with the process as it keeps the scope from being displaced across the sides.
- Always screw the mount slowly as you can, then do it quickly once you are sure that it is secured in the right place.
- Take your time along the way, as it is one of the most important steps while calibrating your scope.
Attach your rifle Scope To The Mount
Once you are done with the base’s mounting, you can now go ahead with the next step, which is attaching the scope with the mount. To do this, you can follow these steps:
- Go through the instructions on the scope manual and place the scope over the mount.
- Now adjust the orientation of the eyepiece.
- Once you get a clear and sharp image, you can now tighten the rings.
- Keep looking at the crosshair to make appropriate adjustments until you set up the crosshair in the exact vertical position.
- Now you can tighten the screws on the mount, but check the crosshair in the meanwhile, too, to keep it perfectly centered.
- Yet again, it is time to screw the mount. You can do it by tightening it slowly and gradually.
- Do keep an eye on the cross-hair to ensure it is not moved from the center.
Test And Calibrate your Rifle Scope
Step 1: Try yourself at Shooting Range.
When you are done with the above steps, the first thing you should do is to go to a shooting range nearby. This is important to be at the actual shooting range so that you can ideally test and calibrate the rifle scope. What you can do there includes:
- Test your rifle scope multiple times from different distances.
- Have enough of the ammunition and other safety precautions
To get the perfect calibration of your scope and a precise assessment, you should take the bull’s eye, mainly designed at the shooting ranges for calibration.
Step 2: Position the rifle on a stable rest
Since there is a margin of error, especially if you are a beginner, you should always use a solid and stable base when you are going to shoot. You can find an appropriate rest from a sports shop or any shop where there are shooting supplies may be available. The rests come in different styles and sizes. So, you can choose as per your requirements. However, even if you could not manage to get hold of proper rest for the purpose, you can still go ahead with anything which may provide you the necessary support and stability like books or bricks or any other alternatives.
Step 3: Go ahead with the actual shooting.
Now comes the stage of actual shooting. You can do it following the steps:
- Firstly, load your rifle, adjust your scope properly to see the target clearly and sharply.
- Start shooting. Initially, it would be best if you shot 5 times at least.
- When you are examining your grouping, always use a range sight or retrieve your target.
- You can adjust the scope turrets if needed before you shoot again.
- Repeat the whole process, make the adjustments if and when required until you start shooting your target perfectly without any misses.
- For the best results, you should need to make many adjustments as the basic mechanism is the same, no matter what type of rifle you are using.
Step 4: Change your shooting positions
After you have made all these adjustments, you can test yourself from different distances. To confuse confusion, you can take another target from various distances. The best wag to go about is to start from a smaller distance, like 20 yards, and gradually keep taking the target from a farther point. You can go as far as 50 yards slowly so that you have the required practice.
Conclusion:
Since rifle shooting involves a lot of practice and training, you need to be careful about each rifle shooting aspect. It is always recommended that you go through all the accessories and set them up whenever needed because you will not be able to enjoy the activity to the maximum otherwise. You need to ensure that you take the best-quality rifle and scope. If you could not calibrate the scope properly, you will not hit the target as accurately as required.
